To help your pet feel at home, it’s a good idea to set up a space that’s just for them. Put their bed in a quiet corner where they can relax and sleep undisturbed. If you’re getting a cat, it’s important to make sure their sleeping spot is in a separate space from their litter tray.

Look into local vets before you get your pet so that you’re ready to register with one right away. Then you’ll know where they are and who to call if you have an emergency. You should also book in your pet’s first check-up as soon as possible after you bring them home.

If you have a cat, you need to decide whether they will stay indoors or be allowed outside. If they will be staying indoors, you will need to help them get enough exercise by playing with them regularly.

Dogs over the age of 8 weeks are legally required to be microchipped so be sure to book an appointment early on if they don’t have one already. From 10 June 2024, cats in England over the age of 20 weeks will also need to be microchipped. By having a tiny microchip with a unique code placed under your pet’s skin, you’re giving them the best chance of being found if they’re lost or stolen.

Dogs also need a collar and tag displaying your name and address for when you’re out and about.

Remember to think about how you’ll get your pet home safely too. As part of the Highway code dogs should be properly secured in the car, to keep them safe and to stop them from distracting the driver. Make sure you have a pet carrier ready or a harness that can be clipped into the seatbelt fastening.
